Our next AGM takes place on Wednesday September 10th, at 10am GMT. We have exciting opportunities for new committee members to join our activities – if you are thinking of joining the research group, see details of committee roles below.
Chair (three-year post)
In this leadership role you will guide and direct the activities of the Research Group. The work includes but is not limited to:
- Chairing Group meetings including the AGM, distributing workload for planned events and activities evenly across the committee, proposing and leading any discussions needed related to the Research Group.
- Attending RHED Research Groups Discussion Forum
- They may also be asked to respond to consultations by the Society on behalf of the group
- The Chair must be a current RGS-IBG Fellow.
Along with the Treasurer and Secretary this role makes up the Executive, this is the group to whom any official communication for the RGS-IBG is sent, to be distributed with the wider committee.
We invite applications for Chair from academics at any career stage, however please note that some leadership experience or experience as part of similar Groups/committees will be beneficial.
Secretary (three-year post)
The Secretary is a member of the executive committee of the Research Group, alongside the Chair and Treasurer. The main duties of the Secretary are:
- Supports the Chair, with particular responsibility for organising and minuting the group’s AGM and other meetings
- May also coordinate membership, annual reporting, and any grant applications
- Compile annual report of activities for RHED
- Decision-making on committee activities as part of the Executive, including awarding the dissertation prize
- Support and, where appropriate, co-lead research group activities
The Secretary is expected to be a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG). Those who are interested in taking on a Research Group executive committee role (Chair, Secretary, Treasurer), but whose circumstances prevent them from taking up Society Fellowship, are invited to submit an expression of interest for a bursary to support Fellowship using the form available here: https://www.rgs.org/research/research-groups/resources-for-research-group-committees#executive-role-bursaries
Early Career Officer (one-year post)
The ECO role is a one-year term in the first instance but may be extended to two.
The ECO will:
- Represent needs and interests of early-career academics
- May organise ECR focused events
- May collaborate with PG committee reps to support transitional stages between PG and early career research and teaching
- Develop opportunities for a range of career-stage scholars to share their work and to facilitate early networking opportunities
- Support wider research group activities, including awarding the dissertation prize
